What power bank capacity do I need?

The power bank capacity is stated in milliampere hours (mAh) and shows how much power it can store. However, the actual capacity available is lower due to internal losses (e.g. due to the development of heat during charging). The reduced mAh value of the power bank and the capacity of the mobile device you want to charge determine whether or how often you can fully charge your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

  • 5000 mAh power bank

You need at least this capacity to fully charge newer smartphones once. You can find out the charging capacity of your mobile phone in the manual, for example. It is sensible to buy a power bank of this kind if you are looking for a very small and lightweight power pack that fits in any trouser pocket and is always on hand in an emergency.

  • 10000 mAh power bank

A 10000 mAh power bank is sufficient to fully charge your smartphone 2-4 times. This means you don’t need to recharge the power bank each time you charge your mobile phone . This capacity is sufficient for a single charge for many tablets and some small laptops. Look in the manual to find out the charging capacity of your device. Hama power packs of this size have multiple charging outputs, enabling you, for instance, to charge two phones at the same time.

  • 15000 mAh power bank

A 15000 mAh power bank is required to sufficiently charge a laptop or a large tablet (charging capacity between 8000 and 12000 mAh). If you’re spending a week camping in nature, this can also be sufficient to make sure the smartphone can be supplied with electricity until you return home.

  • 20000 mAh power bank

A power bank of this capacity can be used to charge many tablet and laptop models at least 1-2 times. There are often multiple charging outputs via which, for example, a smartphone can be charged while a laptop battery is also being supplied with electricity to watch films. However, when travelling, more battery also means more weight and more space taken up in your luggage.

  • 24000 mAh power bank

If you don’t have any access to power for several days while travelling, the 24000 mAh power bank offers sufficient charging power to fully charge a smartphone with 3000 mAh every day for almost a week. These large power banks have multiple charging outputs to simultaneously charge a mobile phone, laptop and the like, as well as a large battery, which can weigh around 500 g.

Connection: What should you bear in mind?

A power bank has a charging input (Micro-USB or USB-C socket), via which you can charge the power bank when it is empty, and a charging output with USB-C and/or USB-A sockets to charge a mobile phone and the like. Large power banks have multiple outputs to simultaneously charge several devices, while small power banks often get by with just one USB-C connector, which serves as the input and output. There is no need to insert the cable if you charge your smartphone wirelessly with a Hama power pack for inductive charging. Which power bank connectors you need depends on how fast you want to charge, which charging cables you use and how many devices you want to charge simultaneously.

The different USB connectors

High charging speeds can be achieved with a USB-C connector as a charging output and input – both when charging your mobile devices and when charging the power bank. Hama power packs with USB-C connector

Most power banks still have a trapezoidal Micro-USB socket: the power bank can be charged via this using a common Micro-USB charging cable connected to the power adapter.

You can use the large, angular USB-A connector on the power bank to charge your mobile devices with a standard USB-A charging cable. Larger power banks have multiple USB-A charging outputs.

What else should I bear in mind?

Size and weight

When buying a power bank, make sure the size and weight suit your purposes. An extremely lightweight and small power bank might be more important than the maximum capacity.

Speed

A power pack with a USB-C port and Power Delivery and/or Quick Charge is required to charge your phone with fast charging at the highest possible charging speed.

Multiple device charging

If, for instance, you want to charge a smartphone and laptop at the same time, you need a power pack with multiple USB charging outputs and a sufficiently high capacity (above 20000 mAh).
